What is BLISS?
BLISS (Brownlee Language International Summer School) runs British Council accredited residential English language summer schools for students aged 8–17 at four independent boarding schools in Scotland and England. BLISS has more than 25 years' experience and welcomed students from over 20 countries in 2026.
Where and when are the BLISS summer schools in 2027?
Dollar Academy, Dollar, Scotland (45 minutes from Edinburgh): 27 June – 25 July 2027, ages 10–17. Strathallan School, near Perth, Scotland: 4 July – 1 August 2027, ages 8–17. Loretto School, Musselburgh, Edinburgh: 4 July – 15 August 2027, ages 10–17. Prior's Field, Godalming, Surrey (45 minutes from London Waterloo): 7 July – 4 August 2027, ages 10–17.
How much does a BLISS summer school cost?
1 week: £1,225. 2 weeks: £2,450. 3 weeks: £3,625. 4 weeks: £4,800. Optional supplements are charged on top.
What is included in the price?
Morning English lessons and course materials; afternoon electives and a full evening activity programme; two full-day excursions per week; all meals, accommodation, bedding and Wi-Fi; visa support if needed; a welcome pack with water bottle; and a certificate and graduation ceremony.
What optional extras are available?
Horse riding £395 per week; outdoor adventure (kayaking, paddleboarding, rafting and surfing) £305 per week; golf £270 per week; Discovery programme £185 per week; extra English in groups of up to 5, or one-to-one, £30 per hour; GuardMe insurance £30 per week.
How many hours of English are taught?
Students have 15 hours of English a week, every weekday morning from 9:00 to 12:30, in small classes taught by qualified teachers using project-based learning. Students choose between Core English and Global Leadership. Global Leadership is for ages 14–17 and needs at least a B1 level of English.
What do students do in the afternoons, evenings and at weekends?
Afternoons: students choose from mixed sports, multi-activities, creative arts, Discovery, outdoor adventure, golf or horse riding. Evenings: a full programme including discos, quizzes, a talent show, karaoke and sports. Weekends: full-day trips, including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling and St Andrews from the Scottish schools, and London, Oxford, Cambridge and Brighton from Prior's Field.
What are the arrival and departure days?
Stays run Sunday to Sunday, or Wednesday to Wednesday. Extra nights can be added for £89 per night, subject to availability.
Do you offer airport transfers?
Yes. Minibus transfers to and from Edinburgh, Heathrow and Gatwick airports cost £55 per person each way, between 9am and 3pm on Sundays, or on Wednesdays for Prior's Field. Other transfer times can be arranged and are quoted individually.
What is the accommodation like?
Students live in school boarding houses, in single or shared rooms with shared bathrooms. Rooms are cleaned daily and laundry is available. At Prior's Field, laundry costs £10 per bag.
How are students supervised and kept safe?
A 24-hour residential pastoral team looks after students throughout their stay. Lights out is at 22:30 or 23:00. Phones are switched off during lessons and activities. Alcohol, smoking, vaping and drugs are not permitted.
Do students need insurance?
Yes. All students need medical, travel and personal insurance. GuardMe cover can be added for £30 per week.
How do I book and pay?
A 10% deposit confirms a place. The balance is due by 15 May 2027, and instalment plans can be agreed in advance. Payment can be made by bank transfer, Wise, Transfermate or card via a secure link. Students also pay a £20 refundable deposit for their key card.
What is the cancellation policy?
If you cancel more than 30 days before arrival, all fees are refunded except the 10% deposit. If you cancel within 30 days of arrival, there is no refund.
Who accredits BLISS?
BLISS is British Council accredited, a member of English UK, a Trinity College London registered exam centre, a Living Wage employer, and a Beyond Scotland award winner in 2023 and 2024.
