Naturally, confidently, in English.
That’s what a Mini Stay is all about.
At BLISS, we’ve always believed that language is best learned when it’s lived. Not memorised for a test. Not repeated from a workbook. Lived. Spoken. Shared. Experienced. The best English learning happens when students are relaxed, curious, and simply busy being part of life around them.
That’s what makes a Mini Stay so powerful.
Students join us for a short period, but from the moment they arrive, they step into an experience designed to help them use English in real and meaningful ways. As well as the structured English lessons, the real magic often happens outside the classroom.
It happens when students ask for directions and understand the answer. When they chat over lunch about what they’ve seen that morning. When they hear different voices, pick up new expressions, and start using English without stopping to translate everything in their heads first. It happens in those small moments where language stops feeling like a subject and starts becoming something natural.
That’s when confidence quietly grows.
And Scotland, it must be said, is a rather wonderful place for that kind of learning.
Of course, we are biased we’re Scottish after all, but there’s something genuinely special about being immersed here. Our cities are full of character, history and stories, but they’re also welcoming and easy to explore. Students can spend the morning discovering world-class museums, walking streets filled with history, or visiting iconic landmarks like Edinburgh and Stirling Castle, as well as the beautiful Scottish landscape. Students can then find themselves chatting in cafés, exploring local culture, or taking in the kind of scenery that makes everyone stop for photographs.
Learning doesn’t switch off when lessons end, it simply changes shape.
One of the loveliest things about our recent Mini Stay in Edinburgh was seeing just how quickly students settled into that rhythm. What began with a little hesitancy, soon turned into laughter, conversation and growing independence. They embraced every part of the experience, from classroom activities to exploring the city, and perhaps without even realising it, their English became stronger day by day because they were living it.
That is very much the BLISS approach.
We welcome, support and encourage our students from the moment they arrive. We want them to feel confident to try, determined to speak, and inspired to keep learning long after they return home. Whether a student joins us for a full programme or just a short Mini Stay, our hope is always the same; that they leave with improved English, broadened horizons, and a little more belief in themselves.
Because sometimes, a short stay can open a very big door.
Mini Stay, short in length but HUGE in impact.
Come and experience it for yourself with BLISS.

We love our schools

https://www.brownleeschools.com/the-blissful-blog/we-love-our-schools

https://www.brownleeschools.com/the-blissful-blog/we-love-our-schools#comments

Uncategorized

There’s a lot of conversation in our industry about facilities.En-suites. Modern buildings. Campus upgrades.
And yes, those things are nice. They photograph well. They’re easy to sell.
But they’re not what matters most.
Talk to me about learning environments for under-18s. Because that’s the real difference.
At BLISS, we choose to work exclusively with leading boarding schools. Not because of tradition or prestige for its own sake, but because of how those environments are designed.
What does that actually mean in practice?
Classrooms designed for engagement and interaction — not lectures.
Houses that support pastoral care and community — not just accommodation.
Clear structures around supervision, routine, and wellbeing — not loosely managed independence.
Spaces that help young people feel safe, known, and supported — not just occupied.
These things aren’t added in later. They’re built into the fabric of the environment.
And when you’re working with young people, that matters. A lot.
Could you run a summer school somewhere else? Of course.
But you’d spend your time trying to recreate systems that already exist in a boarding school setting — supervision models, pastoral care structures, routines, safe spaces.
We’d rather start with the right foundation.
Because when the environment is right, everything else works better.
Students settle faster.
They engage more in lessons.
They build friendships more naturally.
They grow in confidence — not just in English, but as individuals.
That’s the difference we see every summer.
So yes — talk to me about en-suites, if you like.
But what really matters is this: Where are young people actually going to feel safe, supported, and ready to learn? That’s the question worth asking. If you’d like to work with a team that puts environment, care, and quality at the centre of everything, you know where we are.

Why Hearing Different Accents Is One of the Best Ways to Learn English

https://www.brownleeschools.com/the-blissful-blog/why-hearing-different-accents-is-one-of-the-best-ways-to-learn-english

https://www.brownleeschools.com/the-blissful-blog/why-hearing-different-accents-is-one-of-the-best-ways-to-learn-english#comments

Uncategorized

When many students start learning English, they often think there is one “correct” accent they should aim for.British. American. Maybe something they’ve heard in films or on television.
But the reality of English is far more interesting.
English is spoken by over a billion people across the world, and it naturally sounds different depending on where someone is from. From Scotland to South Africa, from Canada to India, English comes with a wonderful range of accents.
And for learners, that’s actually a very good thing.
English Is a Global LanguageToday, English isn’t just the language of one country — it’s the language of global communication.
Students use English to:

study at international universities

travel

work in global companies

collaborate with people from many cultures

In these situations, they won’t only hear one accent. They’ll hear many.
Learning to understand different accents prepares students for real-world English, not just classroom English.
It Builds Stronger Listening SkillsStudents who only hear one accent can sometimes struggle when they encounter a different one.
But learners who are exposed to a range of voices quickly become more flexible listeners.
They begin to focus on meaning and communication, rather than expecting every word to sound exactly the same.
Over time, this builds confidence and adaptability — two very important skills for using English internationally.
Accents Reflect Culture and IdentityAn accent is more than pronunciation. It reflects where someone comes from, their culture, and their story.
Hearing different accents helps students understand something important about English: it is a language shared by people all over the world.
And it also reminds learners that they don’t need to lose their own identity in order to speak excellent English.
Clear communication matters far more than sounding exactly like someone from a particular place.
Communication Comes FirstThe goal of learning English isn’t perfection.
The goal is communication.
Being able to:

understand different speakers

express ideas clearly

ask questions

take part in conversations

These are the skills that really matter.
In international environments — like summer schools — it’s completely normal to hear many accents in the same conversation.
And that’s exactly the kind of experience that helps students grow as confident English speakers.
The BLISS ApproachAt BLISS, students meet teachers and staff from different parts of the UK and around the world.
This creates a rich and authentic learning environment where students hear English spoken naturally and in many different ways.
It helps them become more adaptable, more confident, and better prepared for the international world they are stepping into.
Because English isn’t one voice.
It’s many voices — and that’s what makes it such a powerful language.

Much ado about Something!

https://www.brownleeschools.com/the-blissful-blog/much-ado-about-something

https://www.brownleeschools.com/the-blissful-blog/much-ado-about-something#comments

Uncategorized

The BLISS Academy Is Not “Just English Class” (And why that difference matters more than ever)In a world where “English classes” are everywhere, families are asking a more important question:What kind of learner — and person — will my child become? How will they handle their English Language self?

At The BLISS Academy, English is not the end goal. It’s the tool. What makes the Academy different is not just what students learn, but how, why, and very importantly who they become in the process.

1. English Is the Foundation — Not the Finish Line
Traditional English classes often focus narrowly on:
Grammar exercises
Vocabulary lists
Exam preparation
Passive classroom learning

At The BLISS Academy, English is treated as a living, working language — the language students use to:
Solve problems
Lead discussions
Collaborate across cultures
Present ideas with confidence

Students don’t just study English. They think, create, debate, and lead in English.

2. We Teach Skills for the World Students Are Entering

The BLISS Academy is built around future-focused learning, integrating English with:
Global citizenship
Critical thinking & problem-solving
Public speaking & communication
Collaboration and leadership
Independence and self-belief

Every programme is designed so students leave with transferable skills they can use in school, university, and beyond — not just better test scores.

3. Learning Extends Beyond the Classroom

Real confidence doesn’t come from sitting still. At The BLISS Academy, learning happens:

In workshops and projects
Through discussion, debate, and reflection
In real-world contexts that require initiative and teamwork

Students are encouraged to question, contribute, and take ownership of their learning — something traditional English classrooms rarely prioritise.

4. A Community, Not a Course

One of the most powerful differences families notice is the culture.

The BLISS Academy is:
Supportive but challenging
Structured yet flexible
Aspirational without being intimidating

Students are known as individuals.
Their voices matter.
Their confidence grows because they feel seen, trusted, and stretched.

This sense of belonging transforms how students engage with English — and with learning as a whole.

5. Outcomes That Go Beyond Language

While students leave with:

Stronger English
Clearer communication
Greater academic confidence

They also leave with:

Independence
Curiosity
Global awareness
The confidence to speak up — anywhere in the world

Parents often tell us the biggest change isn’t just linguistic. It’s how their child carries themselves. Their confidence in the language

So, Is The BLISS Academy an English Programme? Yes, it is.

But more importantly, it is:

A launchpad for confident global learners
A place where language unlocks opportunity
A programme designed for students who want more than “just English class”

Because English should never be the limit. It should be the beginning.

Why Choose BLISS Summer Schools?

https://www.brownleeschools.com/the-blissful-blog/why-choose-bliss-summer-schools

https://www.brownleeschools.com/the-blissful-blog/why-choose-bliss-summer-schools#comments

Uncategorized

Choosing the right summer school is about more than learning English. Whether it’s the rolling ‘r’ of a Glaswegian greeting, the sing-song rhythm of the Highlands, or the lyrical flow of Edinburgh’s refined tones, each variation of the accent carries its own charm.

The Scottish accent has a way of captivating listeners, making words feel warmer, stories more compelling, and humour even funnier. Maybe it’s the way it lilts, like the rise and fall of mist-covered hills, or the way certain words—wee, bairn, bonnie, neep—hold a charm no other dialect can quite match.

The accent is woven deeply into Scotland’s history, culture, and sense of identity. And let’s not forget — nothing quite beats the joy of hearing a Scottish storyteller spinning a tale, or the sheer power of a well-delivered Scottish “Och aye!”

Whether you’re a native speaker or just an admirer, there’s no denying that the Scottish accent is pure magic* — a sound that instantly transports you to a world of ancient castles, breathtaking lochs, and legendary folklore.

So go on — embrace it!

*while this is all completely true, it was 100% written by a Scottish person!!
