Scotland is simply stunning. Any visitor will surely be captivated by the mountains, glens and dramatic scenery all around. Scotland is the home of golf and the Loch Ness Monster; of Sean Connery and Ewan McGregor; of scientists, politicians, artists and musicians. It has castles that were once home to medieval kings and queens. Scotland is also the land of the world’s shortest commercial flight (47 seconds on a good day!).
The Brownlee Language International Summer School in Scotland is situated just outside the historic town of Stirling, often called the Gateway to the Highlands. Stirling is where William Wallace led the first battle for Scottish independence, the Battle of Stirling Bridge, in 1297 AD. Only 12 minutes’ drive from the school, the National Wallace Monument
overlooks the site of this famous Scottish victory. The monument, itself a spectacular landmark, is nevertheless outdone by Stirling Castle, only a few kilometres away.

Stirling Castle dates from 1110 AD and is one of the largest and most important in Scotland. Before the union of Scotland and England, Stirling Castle was one of many Scottish royal residences, very much a palace as well as a fortress. Several Scottish kings and queens have been crowned at Stirling. Perhaps the most famous was Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1542 AD.
